Artist's Comments

These were taken 5/21/2005 by Jim Shibley.

These pictures are both a testament to how far I've come as an editor and how much further I need to go. And yes, I also had some help, and even so, I still see many flaws in each image and it bugs the hell out of me. The day these were shot, it was overcast. There was a huge lack of contrast. This one didn't seem to take to well to me converting to srgb or to jpg. It looked better as a psd... as they often do. Even so, the before and after is amazing. It's interesting how it seems both over exposed and under exposed. Still had to deal with multiple color contaminations and color correcting this sucker was no easy task.

I almost like these... you look fantastic but there is just something a bit off in the compositions.

Hey, I'm a reasonable guy. But I've just experienced some very unreasonable things. (Jack Burton)

Thank you!!! :) Ya, I know what you mean. There was a certain potential of something, but a few things don't quite add up.

regarding the above comments, in my opinion I feel that a good background is missing here. This shot BEGS to pop out of a background.... maybe a beach shot? Or a good shot outdoors somewhere.

It is still intriguing enough however on it's own.

You want to know the funny thing... this was shot a Willow Lake. There was a background and a decent one... it was just soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo overexposed (lacked contrast and was doubled up with haze) you could only see little hints that there ever was one, and it was actually better to just completely knock the image out. The data that would have been the background, was missing. Most of it was sitting at 255 in R G and B, meaning all the colors were blown out white, with only a few random spots showing some data.... very distracting. Oh well. I'm just the one modeling for the picture at the time, if I could split myself in two and be in front and behind the camera at the same time... I would.

Thanks. :)

It is a fairly good high key shot. I am really surprised to not see purple haze around the high contrast edges. There is no reason to convert back to srgb, it is a smaller color space than even most monitors can produce.

Thank you!!! I don't know... I find if I leave things in RGB the colors end up getting sucked out of the picture. Something happens online to rgb and it really subdues things and sometimes even shifts colors in weird ways. Even srgb is never a guarentee. The psds always look so much better. Even when converting a file over to jpg, there's quite a loss. Hard to win. lol.

Color management is quite complicated. Adobe rgb, and even srgb for that matter are both designed more for print proofing. The color matching benefits are negligible for web deployment because most browsers neglect the color profile, and just put the rgb colors directly on the screen. The easiest way to cope with this is the save for web tool in photoshop. It automagically does sensible things.

Ah, I'll have to check that out.
